Project Summary: Stained Glass Restoration at McWilliams Chapel, 1st Presbyterian Church of Chicago
In 2020, Baltic Art Studio undertook a comprehensive restoration project at McWilliams Chapel, part of the 1st Presbyterian Church of Chicago, Illinois. This project exemplified the studio’s commitment to revitalizing historic stained glass windows while preserving their cultural and artistic significance.
The restoration began with an onsite evaluation of the stained glass windows to assess their condition. Technicians documented areas of damage, including cracks, weathering, and fading. Each window was carefully removed from the chapel to prevent further deterioration and transported to Baltic Art Studio’s workshop.
Upon arrival, the windows were meticulously photographed and documented to ensure the preservation of their original design. Technicians performed a gentle yet thorough cleaning to remove accumulated dirt and grime, revealing the vibrant colors and intricate details hidden beneath years of wear.
The restoration process involved repairing cracked and broken glass pieces. Missing sections were recreated using period-appropriate materials to match the original design. Alfredas Sutkus, Mika Bronx, and Evelina Mayner, master artisans at Baltic Art Studio, worked utilizing advanced techniques to replicate the intricate details and achieve seamless integration.
Damaged lead cames (the framework holding the glass pieces) were replaced to restore structural integrity. Once the repairs were complete, the windows were carefully reassembled, tested for stability, and prepared for reinstallation.
Back at McWilliams Chapel, the restored windows were securely reinstalled, returning them to their rightful place as a focal point of the space’s spiritual ambiance.
The restored stained glass windows at McWilliams Chapel now radiate their original beauty, allowing natural light to illuminate the chapel in stunning hues. This restoration not only preserved an essential part of the church’s heritage but also enhanced its visual and historical significance.
